He stressed that addressing these challenges will require robust regulation, though he admitted this is no easy task. Pointing to efforts like the European Union’s draft Artificial Intelligence Act, which categorizes voter-influencing AI systems as high-risk, Samuel Kwame Boadu called for global standards to ensure accountability. “AI systems influencing voters must be classified as high-risk and subject to strict oversight,” he urged.
In his view, measures like tagging AI-generated content with identifiers such as “AI-generated” can help voters identify manipulated content, but he acknowledged that implementing these solutions would demand significant resources and commitment.
He concluded with a stark warning about the future of elections, expressing concern that AI could undermine democracy if left unchecked. He argued that if AI becomes the primary determinant of election outcomes, voters will no longer play a meaningful role in deciding their leaders.
