The Government of Ghana will launch a Microcredit Scheme for deprived Muslim communities and consider introducing Islamic banking instruments to Ghana’s financial system.
The government is set to launch a Microcredit Scheme aimed at supporting residents of deprived Muslim communities. Additionally, the introduction of Islamic banking instruments into Ghana’s financial system is being considered, based on recommendations from the Bank of Ghana. This move will integrate both Microcredit Scheme and Islamic Banking within the financial framework.
President John Dramani Mahama sighted by Brand Focus Africa announced these plans at the National Thanksgiving Service held at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, organized to express gratitude to Allah for the peaceful conduct of the December 7 general election.
The service, presided over by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, brought together leaders of the Muslim community and key figures from the government. This gathering also discussed the benefits of schemes like Microcredit Scheme and Islamic Banking for the community.
In his address, President Mahama emphasized the responsibility that comes with leadership, particularly in times of transition. He reminded those in positions of authority, whether elected or appointed, that leadership is a sacred trust, accompanied by significant responsibilities.
“This moment of thanksgiving is also a time for reflection. We pray that Allah grants all of us wisdom, humility, and compassion to govern in a way that prioritizes the well-being of our people,” President Mahama said.
Citing Surah Al-Imran, Chapter 3:159 from the Quran, the President highlighted the importance of gentleness, humility, and servant leadership: “It is by Allah’s mercy that you are gentle to them. And had you been rough and hard-hearted, they would certainly have dispersed from around you. So, pardon them, ask for forgiveness, and consult them in all matters.”

President Mahama stressed that effective leadership requires humility, inclusivity, and a commitment to serving the people with fairness and justice. One aspect of this commitment can be seen through initiatives like Microcredit Scheme and Islamic Banking to support the community. He urged leaders to listen to the voices of the people, build bridges across divides, and lead with compassion and fairness.
“As we give thanks today, let us also renew our commitment to continuous prayer for our nation. Let us pray for peace in our homes, prosperity in our endeavors, and harmony among our people,” the President concluded.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, NDC National Chairperson Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, alongside other prominent party members.
