Plaintiff Withdraws Lawsuit Against GRA Commissioner-General Anthony Sarpong’s Appointment

The legal battle over the appointment of Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has come to an abrupt end, as the plaintiff, Emmanuella Sarfowaah, has officially withdrawn the case from the High Court of Justice in Accra.

The lawsuit, which questioned the legality and ethical standing of Sarpong’s appointment, was filed in January 2025. It alleged that his ties to KPMG, a firm with fee-paying contracts with the GRA, created a conflict of interest and that the appointment process had bypassed due process, as the Governing Board of the GRA was not in place at the time to offer the required consultation.

However, in a notice dated February 3, 2025, and filed under Order 17 Rule 2, Sarfowaah discontinued and withdrew the case in its entirety hence, the plaintiff is no longer pursuing legal action against Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, the GRA, or the Attorney General, who were all named as defendants in the suit.

This means that the case will not proceed in court, and Sarpong’s appointment remains intact, free from any legal hurdles.

However, the decision to withdraw raises questions about what led to this sudden turn of events. There has been no official explanation from the plaintiff or her legal team regarding the reasons for dropping the case.
