President Nana Akufo-Addo inaugurated Ghana’s largest gold mine, developed by Cardinal Namdini Gold Limited. The project highlights Northern Ghana’s gold potential and promises job creation and economic growth.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated Ghana’s largest single gold mine in Talensi, Upper East Region.
The project, developed by Cardinal Namdini Gold Limited (CNML), a subsidiary of Chinese-owned Shandong Gold Limited, is an open-cast operation with an anticipated 15-year lifespan. The mine is Ghana’s first new greenfield project since Newmont Akyem’s in 2013, positioning it as one of the largest single gold mines in West Africa. Expected to produce around 150 million tonnes of ore and yield five million ounces of gold, it represents a significant expansion in Ghana’s mining sector.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the project as a landmark achievement, particularly for Northern Ghana, which has been traditionally associated only with small-scale mining. He emphasized the importance of exploration in revealing untapped mineral potential beyond the country’s southern regions, marking a shift in Ghana’s gold mining narrative. “This mine is proof of how essential exploration is to the mining industry,” he said. “Historically, mining in our country has been concentrated in the south, but this investment underscores the vast resources in our northern territories.”
President Akufo-Addo also reinforced the government’s commitment to utilizing mineral resources for national development. He mentioned ongoing support for the Ghana Geological Service to explore more areas and create opportunities for small-scale miners. He acknowledged that the mine would significantly benefit the Talensi District and the Upper East Region, opening avenues for jobs, infrastructure, and community facilities. He urged CNML to adhere to best mining practices and meet environmental standards, as well as engage with local communities and fulfill corporate social responsibilities.
Lands and Natural Resources Minister Samuel Abdulai Jinapor noted that Northern Ghana is emerging as a gold hub, prompting the establishment of regional and district offices in Tamale, Bolgatanga, Wa, and Bole to oversee mining activities and uphold environmental standards.
Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Tong Defa, expressed pride in the project as a symbol of Ghana-China collaboration and affirmed China’s commitment to sustainable development in Ghana.
Shandong Gold’s CEO, Mr. Han Yaodong, assured adherence to Ghana’s environmental laws, while Cardinal Namdini’s Chairman, Mr. Tang Zhenjiang, stressed the company’s commitment to prioritizing local content and creating jobs for local youth. Shandong Gold, one of China’s leading gold producers and a member of the World Gold Council, continues to prioritize ecological, safety, and human-centered standards across its operations.
