Minister of Communications, Sam Nartey George, has announced plans to establish an inter-ministerial committee to address the high cost of data in Ghana. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, February 8, the minister revealed that he had already instructed the ministry’s management to begin the process, with the committee expected to be formed within the next 14 days.
“I met with the director and management of the ministry and gave them the running order. Hopefully, within the next 14 days, we’ll set up an inter-ministerial committee to look at the cost of data,” Sam George stated.
The minister reaffirmed his commitment to reducing data costs, assuring that Ghanaians will witness notable changes by the end of the year. “At my vetting, I said it is my firm belief that before the year ends, we should see some movement in data pricing,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of a consultative approach to policy-making, engaging with telecom operators and industry regulators to gather their input before implementing any changes. “Even before I announced this as policy, I engaged all telecom CEOs. I will be a minister who consults the industry. I won’t introduce policies without securing industry buy-in,” Sam George assured.
Describing his leadership approach as a reset for Ghana’s digital economy, he stressed the need for collaboration between the government and telecom service providers to ensure success. “I told them it’s a new dawn, a reset. I personally engaged every CEO and the chamber to ensure they understand my vision before making any announcements,” he added.
The high cost of data has long been a concern for both consumers and businesses in Ghana. The committee’s recommendations are expected to lead to regulatory changes, pricing reforms, and increased competition within the telecommunications sector, potentially lowering data costs and enhancing digital accessibility across the country.
