The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has awarded fully-funded scholarships to 10 students from the Ga Dangme communities in the Greater Accra region. The initiative, under the Ga Dangme Council Scholarship Scheme, is designed to promote access to higher education for indigenes of the area.
The scholarship package covers tuition fees, application costs, and hostel accommodation for both undergraduate and master’s degree programs.
Recipients will also benefit from internship opportunities as part of the program.
The 10 beneficiaries were selected following a rigorous screening process conducted by UPSA in collaboration with the Ga Dangme Council. The announcement was made at a brief ceremony held at the university, where officials praised the students for their academic excellence and dedication to community development.
Speaking at the event, UPSA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abednego F. O. Amartey emphasized that the scholarship shows the university’s dedication to empowering local communities through education.
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants were required to demonstrate their status as indigenes of Ga Dangme communities and meet specific academic and eligibility requirements. Each applicant also submitted an introductory letter from their traditional council, along with other supporting documents, to the Drolor Centre for Strategic Leadership (DCSL) Secretariat at UPSA. The selection committee considered academic performance, financial need, and leadership potential in awarding the scholarships.
The recipients expressed immense gratitude to UPSA and the Ga Dangme Council for this life-changing opportunity. One of the beneficiaries, Akweley Mensah, who is pursuing a degree in Business Administration, described the scholarship as “a dream come true” and pledged to use her education to give back to her community. Another recipient, Kpakpo Tetteh, a master’s student in Public Administration, expressed how this support will ease his financial burden and allow him to focus on his studies.
The scholarship program is part of a broader effort by UPSA and the Ga Dangme Council to address educational disparities in Greater Accra. Nii Ayikoi Otoo, President of the Ga Dangme Council, commended UPSA for its loyalty to advancing education within local communities and called on other institutions to follow suit in supporting underprivileged students.
