Ghanaian broadcaster Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, has issued a word of caution to her fellow media practitioners, urging them to reflect on their actions in pursuit of relevance, especially when it compromises their integrity. Speaking in a phone interview with Graphic Showbiz on Monday, October 14, 2024, Vim Lady emphasized that the media landscape is highly transient, and those in the field are often quickly forgotten once they exit the spotlight, no matter how much influence they once wielded.
She advised media professionals to prioritize building meaningful, lasting contributions rather than engaging in short-term strategies that may bring temporary fame but ultimately lead to a poor ending to their careers.
“Being away from the media space these past few years has given me a valuable perspective: out of sight, indeed, means out of mind,” she reflected. “It’s a harsh reality check that people tend to forget about us when we’re no longer in their immediate circle.”
Vim Lady, who is currently taking a break from active media work, warned her colleagues against chasing relevance by engaging in sensational or controversial behavior. According to her, the pursuit of attention at all costs is futile, as once their time in the spotlight ends, they are swiftly forgotten.
“One thing I can say is that, if you take the wrong route just to stay in people’s faces, it will end badly. As professionals, we should recognize that there is a time for everything. Even if we go the extra mile to remain relevant, once our time is up, no one cares anymore,” she added.
In addition to career considerations, she stressed the importance of balancing personal relationships with professional ambitions. According to Vim Lady, prioritizing family and self-care is essential for long-term happiness, as a successful career alone cannot shield one from life’s challenges.
“Let’s not pit marriage and family against career. Instead, let’s strive for balance. While a fulfilling career can provide financial stability and personal growth, it’s the love and support of family that truly enriches life,” she remarked.
Vim Lady further reflected on her own experience, admitting that for years she focused on advocating for better conditions for others while neglecting her own well-being. She now understands that self-care is vital in the demanding media world. “No matter what, you will be forgotten someday. So, take care of yourself and prioritize what truly matters.”
Her advice to media professionals is clear: maintain integrity, seek a balanced life, and make lasting contributions that transcend the fleeting nature of fame.
